Kintsugi
Kintsugi is the Japanese art form of repairing pottery by mending areas of breakage with lacquer dusted with powdered gold. In wabi-sabi, the Japanese see beauty in ‘the imperfect, impermanent and incomplete’, and kintsugi is used as part of this tradition.
Kintsugi
I use kintsugi for different reasons:
-
Sometimes, the stress of a large, flat piece in the kiln causes a fracture. I use kintsugi to repair the fracture and ensure that the functional use of the piece can be maintained.
-
In daily life, ceramics can get knocked and broken. By using kintsugi, I can bring the ceramics back to life.
- At special request, such as when a customer bought a kintsugi piece for her parents’ wedding anniversary, to represent the beauty of the relationship despite the bumps along the path.
-
Just for the look of it! The aesthetic art of the piece is can be improved by kintsugi (who doesn’t like a touch of gold?!).
Many of my kintsugi pieces have already been sold. However, I may have some pieces left in stock and I will make some of them again. I also take commissions, so I can make items to your preferred design, size and finish. Simply contact me (see below) and we can have a chat about what you would like.
